Life’s simple pleasures

I periodically go off on a tangent as it relates to a craft – especially knitting or crocheting projects. I recently came across an item from one of these “projects” as I was cleaning out and organizing some space.

The piece I found tonight, a crocheted drawstring bag (pictured below) was empty and I was a little sad that it was just sitting there, unused. I can’t explain why I get somewhat attached to little, seemingly silly, items; but I do.

I’ve explored the role of dopamine in our shopping habits, but something else kicks in when we rediscover a finished object and feel a surge of joy. Apparently this is more of a serotonin reaction than a dopamine surge, and it reflects our sense of satisfaction with a prior accomplishment, as well as our taking pleasure in the positive memories surrounding the item.

I also find it curious that some items inspire much more joy than others. My guess is that there’s more going on than just my consideration of the specific piece. There are likely subconscious / unconscious memories that come into play that are impacting how I feel about it.

Regardless of the “why”, at this time when there’s so much going on in the world to be worried about, it’s nice to have something so simple create such an oversized boost of joy.

Maybe this is what Joseph Campbell meant when he encouraged people to “follow their bliss”! (haha)

I don’t think it is, but perhaps it SHOULD be!

Here’s to all the joy and “bliss” we find in fiber arts and finished projects – of all kinds!
