As I work to finish my Lost Souls crochet shawl, I find that I’m easily distracted by some of the cute pumpkin-centric patterns that are popping up everywhere.
It started with late night yarn-scrolling, which I try to do instead of doom-scrolling, because it’s better for my overall state of mind.
On one such scroll, I discovered that Yarnspirations had posted a short video tutorial (Facebook or Reels) on making a small pumpkin.
I watched the video a couple times, then grabbed a ‘B’ crochet hook (2.25mm) and some Paton’s “Grace” yarn and got to work.

The first one turned out nice, so I quickly made another one.

These are each about the size of a quarter, and I wanted them as holiday earrings, so I tested them as plain pumpkins on ear wires. Alas, I didn’t like the way they hung, or the attachment of the stem to the earring wire.

The next day I experimented with some Jack ‘o Lantern face options, but none of them made me happy (I have an idea for the next pair), so I dug out some old buttons from Joann’s and ta-da!

The stacked rings give the earrings more “swing” and I wanted the stems to be free to curve naturally, and not stretched straight due to being the point of attachment on the ear wires.
Also – don’t you love the background fabric these are hanging on? The fabric, “Ghouls Night Out” was purchased at Snyder’s Sewing Center in York, PA – in business for more than 25-years!! I will be using the fabric to make another crossbody bag – this one with a Halloween theme.
For my first pair of crocheted pumpkin earrings, I’m happy, but have already decided on a few changes for my next pair:
- Sterling ear wires
- Cotton yarn (thinking about Lion Brand bonbons).
- Darker green or brown stem
- Cut out felt Jack ‘o Lantern face!
I’ll also be looking for a pattern to make mini sugar skull (crocheted) earrings.
Since it’s only the 1st of October, I have the whole month ahead for some spooky, crafty fun!
Happy Halloween crafting to all! 🎃👻
